Is American Sign Language (ASL) a Language?

Methods or techniques to use against the school board members who think that ASL is not a formal language or is a foreign language. This is one of the ways you can use to win an argument along with other methods you have learned via vlog/blog.

That is very interesting view!! So, we should inform the educational institutions that ASL is not a foreign language. I was not thinking of that until you pointed it out... You're right, ASL is part of English, and yet ASL has its own language. Not a foreign language....interesting...

Same common about Forgien language.

It make a sense of about ASL Language that I remind hearing people who doesnt understand between foregin or Amercian language. It is really confusion with syntax issues are quiet confused. Hearing people need to take a ASL language if they are interested.

I agree with you. Thank you for brought up issues. I feel that people seem not familiar between ASL is in Forgein language. Three agencies from hearing people who working for ASL interpreter I often end up mess up with hearing people with medical vocubarly. They hire non certificate interprete who is not have a certificate and Hosptial or Clinic doesnt familiar to use hire non certificate from forgien language. Mess up. I agree with you that ASL is your own language. I think forgein language should not hire non certificate interpreter who is not familiar with ASL language.

Hosptial or Clinic are not familiar about ASL certificate or qualified from Forgien language. Need to training their mind clearly. They are also need to take a drug test!

Did you know that the federal government spends only $2 million a year to save endangered Indian languages? Why hasn't anyone done this with sign language? Are we really trying to save sign language?

Sign language is not in jeopardy as it is growing over 4000% in terms of ASL classes (high school, colleges and universities) all over the USA. However, Native Americans are losing their languages and this grant will help preserve the language which is an excellent way to record everything that needs to be preserved.

The question of whether ASL a real language or not but it is a real mode of a language that shows a signed language difference from a spoken language which means English is spoken language! ASL is a signed language both have rules in grammatic structures, except reading and writing! Tasting and smelling recieve not the same result! And but ubnfortunately ASL has not been recognized by US government yet, they know sign language but not a language according to Limit English Proficiency.

Spoken English <--English--> American Sign Language are equal in language. One uses vocal chords and the other uses hands both have information and also transmits the same information to the brain.

Both use English words to communicate even it is spoken or signed.

Hearing people and policy makers need to change their views on ASL because it is a human language, period.

Keep in mind that the govt. has a lot more guilt because of past injustices and atrocities against American Indians than they do with Deaf peoples. So spending money to save their language is just a feeble attempt to assuage that guilt.
